ISLAND BAR | COCKATOO ISLAND

cockatoo Hubby: “What did you guys get up to today?”

Me: “Oh, you know just popped over to the Island for an afternoon drink.”

One of the best things about maternity leave, being a SAHM or "working from home" is exploring all corners of our glorious city without the weekend crowds. The Island Bar on Cockatoo Island is a definite mid-week favourite. I mean, where else can you lounge around resort styles, sipping margeritas on an island, just minutes from the city? I repeat. On. an. Island.  … Hello Sydney Summer!

A hop, skip & short ferry ride from Circular Quay, Woolwich or Balmain wharf, heritage listed Cockatoo Island sits smack bang in the middle of Sydney Harbour. With heaps of space for the kids to run wild- walking trails, picnic spots and activity programs for 7-12 year olds, it's a perfect child friendly destination. There's even a "glamping" option. Jury's still out weather it' s actually "glamping,"  but there are some decent tents that don't need erecting if you're keen to spend the night. The island was closed for a few months while Angelina Jolie shot her movie Unbroken, but happy to report it's back open for business. It's a great destination for a family day trip and even better as a mid week mama catch up. Straight to the Island bar, I say!

Constructed from recycled shipping containers, the bar has an industrial look with a resort ambience. With the palm trees, cool tunes, deck chairs and water views you'd be forgiven for thinking you were on holidays.  There is a small family friendly area where you can happily sip your “Hello Sailor” while the little ones happily munch on tasty wood fired pizza.

After 3pm on weekends it’s Adults only. If you can, go for lunch with the kids mid week or Friday sunset cocktails for some QT with your lover.
